Height of the Reeds
Project type
Installation and Sound Art
Date
2017
Location
Humber Bridge
"The Height of the Reeds" for Hull UK City of Culture 2017 was an "eerie, moving and brilliantly atmospheric" (Yorkshire Post) sound installation experienced as a unique sound walk across the iconic Humber Bridge. This "ambitious, daring and innovative" (Yorkshire Post) work, which garnered a 4.5/5 star rating from Jazzwise, saw participants wearing headphones to immerse themselves in a specially composed soundscape.
Created by Norwegian musicians Arve Henriksen, Jan Bang, and Eivind Aarset, alongside Hull's Jez riley French, the piece blended evocative music with the raw, "creaking wires and clanks" of the bridge and powerful readings by Hull-born actors. Critics hailed it as an "extraordinarily beautiful, haunting piece of music" (Rune Grammofon) that created a "powerful sense of place" (Jazzwise), making it a truly "spellbinding" (Amazon UK customer review) and unforgettable highlight of the City of Culture year. Its immense popularity led to extended runs and a subsequent album release.
